It can be tough to know when you’ve had too much to drink. Our DUI lawyer in Colorado Springs receives calls all the time from clients who are shocked they were over the legal limit after just a few glasses of wine. The legal BAC limit of 0.08 doesn’t leave a lot of room for error, and you could be close to that limit after recently consuming just a few drinks. Everyone is different, though, so there is no “hard and fast” rule to determine if you are going to be alright to drive. So how can you tell?

Download an app.

There are a number of apps available for both iOS and Android phones that help you determine when you’ll be okay to drive. They’ll do their best to calculate how much you’ve had to drink from the data you put in and when your BAC will once again be at safe levels. It’s important to note that these apps are just making educated guesses. Without a test, there is no way to know for sure what your BAC is.

Buy your own breathalyzer.

You can purchase a breathalyzer of your very own. Cheap models aren’t likely to give you accurate readings, so be aware. You can pay a little more and get a model like the ones used by law enforcement, though, to give you a more accurate reading. It could be an expensive investment, but for some people, the peace of mind is worth it.

Play it safe.

Some people choose to avoid a DUI by simply assuming that if they’ve had three or more drinks in an evening, they are over the legal limit. It’s not a bad policy; while these other devices can give you an idea about your BAC, the best way to avoid a DUI is to not get behind the wheel in the first place.
